Drawing Machines


For this material inquiry we were instructed to create a machine that drew in the manner of representing a keyword. My partner and I's keyword was "angry". The beginning of the activity felt very hectic as we spent lots of time gather material that we thought we would use. We ended up using significantly less than we grabbed. This was because after assembling the main body of our machine, as shown here, we realized that the extra material was unnecessary.







Here is a step by step of us assembling the motor to the main body. The purpose of the motor was to give the device a vibration so that the marks bounce around.














Here we planned on making a platform for the motor because it was too heavy to sit up on its own.
















Here you can see how we taped the motor to the platform which we hot glued. This way the motor would stay stabilized.















Then we attached a popsicle stick to the motor with electrical taped wrapped all around so that it stayed on the motor as it ran. We made the stick off center so that the machine did not just stay in the same spot the entire time it was on. It definitely added to the mark marking.












After that, we added our markers onto the bottom of the machine. It required a lot of tape so that the markers didn't move too much and wobble. We chose red and black as the colors to help exemplify the keyword of "angry".













Here is the back side of our completed machine. The stryofoam ball on top is there to help when handling the machine when turning it off or on.















Here is the completed machine from the front side. The power switch is on the bottom between the red markers. We later realized this placement was awkward when the device was turned on as the propeller was blocking the switch. This is something we would change if we did the project again.











To the left, you can see how the machine made its marks. We wanted it to bounce around as if it was a mad person stomping around pacing. Below, is the final marks it made during the demonstration for the class. Overall, It was a really fun activity and I feel that we problem solved a lot during the creation of our machine.
